From Edwardian Impressionism to the artists of W.W. II—in painting, illustration, prints, and sculpture—the years 1900 to 1945 were a time of great change in British art. Sir George Clauson, Edwin Alexander. and James Hamilton Hay looked to the French masters for inspiration, painting landscapes, portraits, and still lifes imbued with feeling. Meanwhile, the cartoonists Sir Max Beerbohm and E. T. Reed created striking illustrations and satires. Wartime painters brought lyricism and solemnity to tragic scenes. The fascinating aspects of early-twentieth-century British art are explored in this exhibition. Volume II, running later this year, covers the period from 1945 to modernity. —E.C.
