When Anne Boleyn was executed in 1536, the news traveled slowly. Ava Pickett’s debut play imagines how three ordinary women in rural Essex might have received it—and what it meant to them. Directed by Lyndsey Turner and starring the young Liv Hill, Black Mirror’s Siena Kelly, and Sex Education’s Tanya Reynolds, 1536 has just transferred to the West End after a run at London’s Almeida Theatre. It’s part of a long, great streak for Pickett. At 32, she’s already won the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and has worked with Margot Robbie, whose production company, LuckyChap, co-produced 1536. Plus, Pickett provided the script for Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming film on Joan of Arc. Not bad. —Jeanne Malle
