Beginning in 2016, the New York artist Zoe Leonard embarked on an expedition: She would take photographs along the Rio Grande, specifically the 2,000 kilometers that demarcate the boundary between the United States and Mexico. On her journey, Leonard traveled through the border cities Ciudad Juarez and El Paso as she headed toward the Gulf of Mexico, where the river flows into the Atlantic. She paid close attention to her surroundings, both man-made and natural, and shot industrial buildings as well as spotless mountain ranges, untouched water, and farms. Her quest? To record the true nature of the border, which has been lost in stereotypical media depictions. —Elena Clavarino
