Many fashion designers cannot sew a stitch. And not all fashion designers sketch. Some drape. The conceptual couturier Rei Kawakubo once walked into her workroom, crumpled up a piece of brown paper, and asked her artisans to produce designs inspired by the crumple. Those designers that do sketch, however, leave to history a lively trail of invention. Yves Saint Laurent drew many of his designs in his Klein-blue home in Marrakech, sketching in silence for days at a time before returning to Paris, where his atelier brought his visions to life. His simple yet sure pencil drawings will be on display alongside several of the dresses they gave rise to, allowing audiences to see the early stages of the couturier’s well-known collections. —Jeanne Malle
