Over the last 40 years, the extremely strange creative offspring of the Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara have been exhibited across the globe—at the Albertina Modern, in Vienna, and the Museum of Modern Art, in New York, at Pace in Hong Kong and the Stephen Friedman Gallery in London. His “big headed girls”—paintings of children with wide-set eyes, often expressing frustration, boredom, or deviousness, and not without humor—are instantly recognizable. Nara’s playful tone extends to his work as a sculptor. This exhibition at Blum, in Los Angeles, features both recent and older sculptures by Nara, aimed at highlighting his evolution in the medium. —Jack Sullivan
