What happens when a wealthy businessman (Benicio del Toro) convinces his only daughter (Mia Threapleton), a nun, to aid in his latest scheme? And what happens when that pious daughter becomes the target of tycoons, terrorists, and assassins? In this black comedy directed by Wes Anderson, the camera travels from the protagonist’s cavernous mansion, Palazzo Korda, to Modern Greater Independent Phoenicia—a fictional Middle Eastern nation—to find out. The cast includes everyone from Tom Hanks to Scarlett Johansson to Bryan Cranston. “In a way,” the critic William Bibbiani writes in The Wrap, “it’s his most challenging work, even though it is—as his films often are—breezy and friendly.” —Elena Clavarino
