Yesterday

The musical rom-com Yesterday was advertised as a different kind of “Beatles flick,” which it is. Jack Malik, an aspiring but unsuccessful singer, grapples with his unavailing dream. One fateful evening, he is leveled by a bus just as the entire globe suffers a power outage—a cosmic event. He awakens to discover that no one but him has ever heard of John, Paul, George, or Ringo. In front of Jack is the ultimate career steroid. He immediately begins performing one of the greatest songbooks in history and soon he’s an international sensation. Yesterday is founded on a fetishistic fantasy, a musician’s ultimate “what if?” scenario. It works because it’s funny, occasionally unexpected, and because Himesh Patel’s portrayal of Jack is an authentic reflection of how an actual person, in their imperfect morality, might handle this chance of a lifetime. —Jack Sullivan
