A few months after the death of Vincent van Gogh, his friend, the artist Emile Bernard, wrote, “It was, you will remember, his favorite color, the symbol of the light that he sought in people’s hearts as well as in works of art.” Bernard was referring to yellow. You know which yellow. The fevered warmth that hovers toward orange. In the 19th century, the color represented courage and renewal. This exhibition in Amsterdam explains what yellow meant to Van Gogh, beginning with his masterpiece Sunflowers. It also includes an installation by Olafur Eliasson that allows visitors to immersively experience the color. —Elena Clavarino
