A lot of aesthetic labels have been attached to Yayoi Kusama: Art Brut, Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism, Abstract Impressionism. And yet it all comes down—or up—to polka-dots. Dancing dots, or what she calls “infinity nets,” are a medium for Kusama. She first saw dots in hallucinations at age 10. They have since been her portal—painted on people, trees, rooms, lights, giant pumpkins—to hallucinatory works in just about every medium. —L.J.
