Through antiquity, women in the art world were mostly overlooked, hidden in the shadows of men. In the 20th century, female artists finally elbowed into the limelight. Focusing on women’s importance in abstract art, the Centre Pompidou presents works in many media from female artists spanning the 1860s to the 1980s, and coming from Europe, North America, Africa, and Asia. The show tells a historical story—one of perseverance and triumph. Louise Bourgeois, Joan Mitchell, Georgiana Houghton, and Judy Chicago are among the 106 artists in the exhibition. —E.C.
