The art of Wolfgang Laib brings together the ancient and the modern, Laozi and Brancusi. Born in Germany in 1950, Laib combines Western minimalism with Eastern philosophy—particularly Indian philosophy—to create startling meditative works. In his “Rice Houses” series, Laib’s colorful, aluminum-coated wooden houses are secretly filled with mounds of rice. Living within these rough-hewn reliquaries are themes of materiality, imagination, and reverence. —Thalia Bonas
