“These people are each other’s homes,” writes The Guardian’s Arifa Akbar about Wish You Were Here, “and it is through them that they find belonging.” Sanaz Toossi’s play opens on the eve of a wedding in Iran: five women gather behind closed doors, gossiping, laughing about virginity and sex, and comforting the anxious bride. From there, the story unfolds over the tumultuous years following the 1979 Iranian Revolution. The women marry, raise children, and experience loss, their friendships threatened as difficult choices pull them apart. “A subtle love letter to female friendship,” says Akbar, the play captures “slices of life, with the in-between unexplained.” —Jeanne Malle
