If you’re a fan of skateboarding who still flinches when a skater whizzes by on the sidewalk, Bowl EP might be more your speed. Nazareth Hassan’s new play is skateboard-centric, but from a safe distance: the action unfolds in a skate park built into the stage. There, two characters in their 20s, Kelly K Klarkson and Quentavius da Quitter, spend their days drinking, smoking, and coming up with original rhymes for their rap music. What starts as a romantic story, full of flirtation and intimate conversations, soon takes a darker turn when an unforeseen demonic force enters the picture and puts their love to the test. Hassan’s play shifts, becoming a meditation on love in marginalized communities. “While ‘Bowl EP’ delves into stormy psychological territory, it does not come off as a work in thrall to trauma—a rarity these days,” writes Juan A. Ramírez in The New York Times. “Hassan harnesses its sense of psychic chaos into a messy, poignant and memorable new work.” Bowl EP is a co-production between the Vineyard Theater and the National Black Theatre. The music is Free Fool. —Jeanne Malle
