Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, Season Two

Sean Patrick Small and Quincy Isaiah in Winning Time.

In the case of the N.B.A. Hall of Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson, the question was never if he would become the subject of a film or television dramatization, but when. Johnson and his equally energetic, electrifying, and continually dominant “Showtime” Lakers squad of the 1980s were as much a spectacle as a basketball team. In 2022, their run-and-gun offense—accented by Magic’s circus-like passing and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s irreplicable skyhook—was brilliantly captured in Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. Vividly shot, the show’s on-court scenes are extravagantly intimate. Season one concluded with Magic, a rookie, winning the N.B.A Finals MVP award, despite losing the Rookie of the Year Award to Boston’s Larry Bird. In Season Two, Winning Time promises to develop their rivalry. —Jack Sullivan
