William Kentridge: More Sweetly Play the Dance

Feb 13 – June 6, 2021
3 Park Drai Eechelen, 1499 Luxembourg

The South African artist William Kentridge creates political films out of drawings in charcoal. It’s a simple process that takes a long time. Kentridge makes a drawing and photographs it; then he alters the drawing with erasures and elaborations, and photographs the new image. This halting process adds up to a film, and is the basis of a Kentridgean lexicon. At MUDAM, Kentridge’s recent short films Sibyl and City Deep, both from 2020, are on view, along with works he created for stage and opera productions. Small-scale drawings, sculptures, and works on paper—all parts of a rich creative process—complete his multifaceted narrative. —E.C.
