In 2015, Madeline Sayet moved from Connecticut to Stratford-Upon-Avon, the city where Shakespeare was born, to study his work. Shortly after she arrived, the U.K. voted to leave the European Union. Alarmed by England’s growing nationalism, Sayet found comfort in stories of her Native ancestors sailing to America in the 1700s. The experience inspired her solo show, which weaves together Native American history and her experience abroad. The play, which premiered at Shakespeare’s Globe in 2019, heads to the Public Theater for its New York premiere. As with the original production, Mei Ann Teo directs. —Jensen Davis
