Let’s unpack the banner headline, shall we? “From the Depths” sounds like so much marketing-department fluffery targeting the Fate-haunted profundities of Tchaikovsky. In fact, the phrase is hijacked from the New Zealander Gareth Farr’s clangorous From the Depths Sound the Great Sea Gongs (1996), of which only the shorter of two thrilling movements will be heard. Farr’s pan-Pacific palette incorporates not just gongs but also Indonesian gamelan and Japanese taiko drumming. We get it that Lu is the conductor, but isn’t there more to say? Well, since you ask … Her full name is Tianyi Lu, she’s a Chinese-born New Zealander, and her credentials include a win at the prestigious Sir Georg Solti International Conductors’ Competition. What the header doesn’t mention is Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16, a Top 40 Classic if ever there was one, with Paul Lewis the excellent soloist. Hey! You can’t shoehorn everything into one little teaser. —Matthew Gurewitsch
