A Streetcar Named Desire had its premiere on Broadway in December 1947 and earned Tennessee Williams the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The plot is simple but full of secrets. Blanche DuBois, a haughty schoolteacher who’s lost her home, crashes at the apartment of her sister Stella, who’s married to Stanley, for an indefinite period of time. The New Orleans summer is sweltering and the apartment is too small. Blanche shows disdain for her sister’s marriage and taunts the working-class Stanley. But what is she herself running from? As the present and the past slowly collide, the mask begins to slip. This acclaimed production, directed by Rebecca Frecknall, features Anjana Vasan as Stella and Paul Mescal (Normal People) as Stanley. Patsy Ferran stepped into the the coveted role of Blanche just a few days before the show opened in London, in late 2022. After two sold-out runs in the West End, this powerful Streetcar comes to BAM. —Jensen Davis
