In 1971, the Menil presented “The De Luxe Show,” a racially integrated exhibition that was a giant step forward for the art world. Virginia Jaramillo, the only woman and Latina artist on the roster, had two paintings in the show. One of them was a large acrylic on canvas called Green Dawn (1970), an abstract work in which a sinuous yellow line enters, then exits, in the upper corner of a bright green field. Now, 50 years later, eight works by Jaramillo—in which lines taut and bounding continue to travel—are on display in her first solo museum exhibition. She is 81, and Green Dawn is present in all its glory. —E.C.
