“We are wrapped in cloth when we’re born,” reads text from the Barbican Museum, “and enshrouded in it when we die.” With more than 100 works by 50 international, intergenerational artists, this exhibition looks at the under-examined medium of textiles as a way to convey notions of power and progress. Organized into six themed sections such as “Subversive Witch” and “Bearing Witness,” the show presents stories of protest, violence, and love alongside art made of fabric, fiber, and thread. Feliciano Centurión, Judy Chicago, Tracey Emin, and Cecilia Vicuña are four of the featured artists. —Jeanne Malle
