Under the Radar

Christopher-Rashee Stevenson, Vin Knight, and Scott Shepherd in rehearsal for Ulysses, one of the plays included in this year’s Under the Radar festival.

Since its founding 21 years ago, the Under the Radar Festival has served as an annual survey of theater’s most exciting new work. Created by Mark Russell and originally housed at the Public Theater, it now takes place across a mix of historic and contemporary theaters in New York City. The festival’s latest edition is its biggest yet, with 30 shows in 24 venues. In particular, we’re excited about these three: New York Theater Workshop’s In Honor of Jean-Michel Basquiat, a tribute to the artist by Roger Guenveur Smith; the Public Theater’s presentation of Elevator Repair Service’s adaptation of Joyce’s Ulysses; and The Visitors, an Australian production making its New York debut at the Perelman Performing Arts Center. —Jeanne Malle
