Fresh off his performance in New York Theater Workshop’s Tartuffe, which closed in late January, Matthew Broderick now heads 20 blocks north, to the Irish Repertory Theatre. Alongside Max Baker and Geraldine Hughes, he’s starring in David Ireland’s Ulster American. The play was first staged at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2018, then made its London debut in 2023 with Andy Serkis, Louisa Harland, and Woody Harrelson. It’s a story of all-around conflict that touches on politics, privilege, ego, and the Northern Irish Troubles. On the night before the first rehearsal of a new play, the Ulster-born playwright Ruth Davenport visits the home of the British director Leigh Carver, where the Hollywood star Jay Conway has also just arrived. What begins as a friendly gathering quickly spirals into chaos. Ciarán O’Reilly directs. —Jeanne Malle
