Amid the noisy drama of tweets, news reports, and headlines, can a “slow” museum exhibition participate actively in democracy? Richard Klein, exhibitions director at the Aldrich, conceived of “Twenty Twenty” to test this question. The pandemic, however, got in the way. Originally scheduled to open in June of 2020—so that seven artists could document the election cycle over real time with ever-changing drawings, photographs, and prints—the exhibition had to be postponed and only opened last October. It is now in its third cycle, which looks at political unrest and the turbulent impact of the far right. Newspaper entries bookend the art in the exhibition. —E.C.
