In 2013, the Public Theater launched Public Works, a civic arts initiative that invites a diverse group of New Yorkers to participate in workshops and theatrical productions, some of them performing alongside professional actors in Shakespeare in the Park. This season, Public Works presents Pericles, the Shakespeare epic about loss and spiritual renewal. Reimagined as a Gospel-like concert by the playwright and songwriter Troy Anthony, the adaptation is staged at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, in Morningside Heights. The cast of more than 100 New Yorkers from all five boroughs will be directed by Carl Cofield, the associate artistic director of the Classical Theatre of Harlem. —Jeanne Malle
