The Parisian couple Claude and Françoise-Xavier Lalanne called themselves “Les Lalanne.” They came to prominence in the 1960s—together!—but they created work separately, both of them looking to nature for inspiration. Over the years, Les Lalanne produced elephants, donkeys, rabbits, bears, and ducks that doubled as small tables, desks, bathtubs, chairs, and stools. Their stylized furniture found its way into hundreds of famous Parisian homes, and quickly propelled the eccentric duo to stardom. Françoise died in 2008, Claude in 2019. This October, the last 19 sculptures from their private collection (discovered in Ury, France) are up for auction in Paris. These are exceedingly rare. —Elena Clavarino
