For Michael Jackson, the year 1993 began with his headline performance in the Superbowl halftime show. He was such a hit that halftime was forever transformed from bland filler to the hotly anticipated star event it is today. Six months later, Jackson was publicly accused of molesting a young boy. Think Twice, a podcast about Jackson’s complicated legacy as both a groundbreaking pop star and a child abuser, begins in 1993, the year his career soared and allegations surfaced. Journalist Leon Neyfakh (of the podcasts Slow Burn and Fiasco) and the hip-hop radio personality Jay Smooth delve into Jackson’s past over 10 episodes. “People just don’t know what to do with his greatness and his genius, on the one hand, [or] with the profound damage that he’s alleged to have done to the people in his life,” says Neyfakh. “I wanted to give people new ways to process those contradictions by providing all this new raw material.” —Jensen Davis
