“I actually no longer use ‘art’ as the framing device,” says Theaster Gates of his multidisciplinary practice. “I think I’m just kind of practicing things, practicing life, practicing creation.” In the multi-part installation Black Chapel, Gates transforms the Middle Hall at Haus der Kunst into a space that considers black representation, history, and spirituality. Using a combination of African art and archived photographs from style magazines Ebony and Jet, mixed with racist imagery of the athlete Jesse Owens—German propaganda from the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin—Gates creates a panorama that carries a political punch. —E.C.
