Since Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar was published in 1969, the picture book has sold more than 50 million copies. That means someone buys a copy every 30 seconds. In 2016, the tale of a voracious baby caterpillar eating strawberries, Swiss cheese, and salami until he is fat and ready to transform into a butterfly was brought to the stage. Created by Jonathan Rockefeller, the heartwarming show includes 75 puppets and mixes in three more of Carle’s stories—Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?; 10 Little Rubber Ducks; and The Very Lonely Firefly. For the third time, it’s playing Off-Broadway. —Jensen Davis
