The emotions of suffering and joy, pleasure and pain, love and loss have been present in the visual arts ever since antiquity. Certainly, the square or rectangular frame that holds these images is a kind of theater, one that draws us in without words. In this exhibition, which is divided into eight sections, paintings of people in the grip of extreme emotion take center stage. Among the many artists included are Louis-Léopold Boilly, Jeanne-Elisabeth Chaudet, Albrecht Dürer, Charles Louis Müller, and Picasso. —Elena Clavarino
