“The Nature of Things” looks at the environmental impact of the arts in medieval times, and also examines the way materials drove the artistic process. An examination of daily concerns and the cyclical scarcity of materials brings historical context to the exhibition. Ecological changes, as well, had a significant impact on some of Europe’s most luxurious goods. With 50 sacred and secular artifacts on view, the show presents new and often overlooked aspects to the way art is made and consumed. —Clara Molot
