The mandolin whiz, singer-songwriter, and radio personality Chris Thile steps out in a show about finding oneself in a little cocktail bar on the Lower East Side. “Finding oneself” as in happening to be or achieving self-realization? Sorry, can’t help you there. The script was co-created by Thile in tandem with his wife Claire Coffee, who also directs. If the premise seems flimsy, bear in mind Thile’s genial personality, which has a way of drawing audiences into his world. The show is one of a slew of new works commissioned by the very-happening ex-dancer and Little Island artistic director Zack Winokur. The money he is spending hand over fist flows from the pockets of Barry Diller, chairman and senior executive of IAC and Expedia Group and founder of the Fox Broadcasting Company and USA Broadcasting. Depending on your politics, the association may sour you on Little Island’s fizzy program. Or maybe not. Remember the Roman tradition of bread and circuses? —Matthew Gurewitsch
