With animal bones, hides, and corpses, Berlinde De Bruyckere is making some of the most profound sculptures of our time. Opening its virtual doors, the Fondazione offers a short filmed tour of her current exhibition “Aletheia,” along with a 16-minute online conversation that sees De Bruyckere answering questions from a group of students. “It is a great honor,” she says, “to express yourself through art. Art helps people to reflect, to find answers in their questioning, [their] dealing with heavy topics in the world.” She talks about her father’s butcher shop, and how as a child she grew used to the sight of blood and carcasses. “I learned to be brave, I learned to deal with these enormous carcasses of death.” What advice can you give us, asks one of the students. “You have to live very honestly and to feel very deeply,” says De Bruyckere, “be yourself and look very deep into your heart to create.” —L.J.
