The Culture: Hip Hop and Contemporary Art in the 21st Century

Until Sept 29
953 Eden Park Dr, Cincinnati, OH 45202, United States

“Hip Hop is what makes the world go round,” says the larger-than-life rapper Snoop Dogg, who rose to stardom in 1992 after Dr. Dre, a famed pioneer of the genre, featured him on his landmark rap album The Chronic. It is difficult to account for the outsized impact that hip-hop has had on contemporary culture since its birth in the Bronx, 50 years ago, but this exhibition at the Cincinnati Art Museum tries. Presenting over 90 works by celebrated artists and fashion designers—among them, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Vivienne Westwood—“The Culture” looks at one of the most explosive movements in music history and its influence on technology, fashion, the visual and performing arts, as well as on music. Commentary from dozens of experts in a variety of disciplines—anthropology, history, Black studies—rounds out the show. —Nyla Gilstrap
