With The Color Purple, a novel published in 1982, Alice Walker became the first Black woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Three years later, Steven Spielberg made a movie of the story, which follows the life of Celie, a young Black woman who grows from docility to independence in the rural South of the early 1900s. Starring Whoopi Goldberg in her breakout role, plus Danny Glover and Oprah Winfrey, the film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards. In 2005, the musical adaptation of the novel arrived on Broadway, garnering 11 Tony Award nominations. Today, Spielberg, Winfrey, and several other producers from past renditions have joined forces for the latest retelling of Walker’s story: a film adaptation of the Broadway musical. It stars Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, H.E.R., and Ciara. Blitz Bazawule (Black Is King) directs. —Paulina Prosnitz
