The Battersea Poltergeist

“I’m Danny Robins, and I don’t believe in ghosts,” says the host of this eight-series podcast. He then amends that by adding, “Here’s what I would have said to you at pretty much any point up until two years ago.” The Battersea Poltergeist pairs investigative reporting with audio drama to revisit the 65-year-old cold case of the Hitchings family, who in 1956 claimed a ghost was haunting their south London home. Starring Toby Jones (Frost/Nixon, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) as paranormal investigator Harold Chibbett and 16-year-old Dafne Keen (His Dark Materials) as a teenaged Shirley Hitchings, the podcast scours the real-life Chibbett’s case file and also interviews the real-life Shirley, who, at age 80, still sticks to her story. The telling of “Britain’s strangest haunting” comes together with spooky yet sophisticated music by Nadine Shah and Ben Hillier. —J.V.
