American Manhunt: Osama Bin Laden

Osama Bin Laden

The fact of 9/11—the vision of the Twin Towers struck by planes, engulfed in flames, and collapsing within two hours—is still as surreal as it is unforgettable. Most documentaries focus on the day itself: the heroism of the passengers aboard United Flight 93, who brought down their plane in Pennsylvania; the chaos and bravery at the Pentagon; and of course the towers themselves. But the aftermath is harder to grasp—the decade-long manhunt for Osama bin Laden that took U.S. forces from the remote mountains of Afghanistan to a walled compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. This documentary by Alex Gibney features interviews with everyone from C.I.A. operatives and Navy S.E.A.L.s to former White House officials—the brains behind the incredibly complicated operation. Here’s how they finally got Bin Laden. —Elena Clavarino
