The Art of Dining: Food Culture in the Islamic World

Iran (Shiraz), A Banquet Scene with Hormuz, from a Manuscript of the Shahnama of Firdawsi, c. 1485–95.

The German philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach coined the expression “man is what he eats” in his 1843 essay “Principles of the Philosophy of the Future.” Still, the saying holds true today—and in any culture. This exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts showcases Islamic art in the context of the region’s culinary traditions. More than 200 objects and artworks that relate to food are on view: spoons, flasks, illustrated manuscripts, and magnificent oil paintings designed to stimulate the senses. Be sure to eat before going. —Elena Clavarino
