Ever since her early days, the Iranian artist Tala Madani has been drawn to transgression, creating works that break with social norms. “I’m mostly interested in art that excavates from the psyche,” Madani told ArtReview in 2021, “not the frontal lobe, not the intellectual, not the speakable, but the unspeakable.” Her first works focused on men and their sexuality, drawn with a visceral crudeness. Later on, she moved to female figures and children, again pushing against the acceptable. In this museum presentation in Athens, her first in Europe in over a decade, Madani presents 40 paintings, drawings, and stop-motion animations. Many depict human figures in scenes private and perverse, uncomfortable and absurd. —Elena Clavarino
