Tala Madani: Chalk Mark

July 29 – Sept 8, 2021
54 Eastcastle St, London W1W 8EF, United Kingdom

Ever since her early days, the Iranian artist Tala Madani has been drawn to transgression, creating works that break with social norms. “I’m mostly interested in art that excavates from the psyche,” Madani recently told ArtReview, “not the frontal lobe, not the intellectual, not the speakable, but the unspeakable.” Her first works focused on men, and depicted sexual intimacy with a visceral crudeness. Later on, she moved to female figures and children, again pushing against the acceptable. In “Chalk Mark,” Madani looks at education and the way it treats—or eats—children. Running concurrently at Pilar Corrias’s second location is Madani’s “Skid Mark.” —E.C.
