Sunday at Il Posto Accanto

An evening at Il Posto Accanto, on East Second Street.

To borrow an expression from the late Queen Elizabeth, the COVID pandemic is “not a period on which I reflect with undiminished pleasure.” But for all the fear, uncertainty, and unpleasantness of that year or two, it did have its romantic moments. For a heartening reminder of that fact, look no further than Seth Zvi Rosenfeld’s new film, Sunday at Il Posto Accanto, which centers on the East Village Italian stalwart Il Posto Accanto, where owners Julio Pena and Beatrice Tosti di Valminuta kept the wine flowing, the cavatelli piping hot, and the party going (albeit al fresco), giving locals who didn’t skip town during the pandemic a place to hang together—in more ways than one. It’s a funny, poignant tale about a community who refused to let one of their own fall into the depressive vortex that claimed so many. It may not leave you longing for 2020, but it will stoke your fondness for New York, and it will almost certainly make you hungry. Available to stream on Apple TV starting October 1. —Nathan King
