Sula Bermúdez-Silverman, a young artist of Afro-Puerto Rican and Jewish descent, creates sculptural installations that reflect cultural and personal conflicts. Her exhibition title comes from a Medieval proverb. It means “uncharacterizable,” she explains, “or does not fit into a specific category.” In two series that have come to life since 2014, Bermúdez-Silverman has created dollhouses from panes of sugar, and quilts made of clear plastic, with found objects placed in square pockets. Her work examines geography and destiny, and themes such as the African diaspora. —E.C.
