During the American Civil War, before cameras were fast enough for photojournalism, “special artists” risked their lives watching and sketching during battle. As they scrambled to draw, the scene in front of them would change. Their imagery had to capture that. Like those “special artists” of the 19th century, the New York-based artist Steve Mumford has drawn (then painted) American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, U.S. military hospitals, Guantanamo, and the BP oil spill in Louisiana. In this exhibition, his recent drawings of Black Lives Matter protests in New York and Portland, Oregon, hand alongside drawings of Trump’s 2016 campaign rallies in Portland, Maine, and Fredricksburg, Virginia. —E.C.
