Sterling Ruby: Acts + Table

Oct 2 – Dec 14, 2019
6–24 Britannia Street London WC1X 9JD

“I use many different media as a kind of schizophrenic labor strategy,” says Sterling Ruby, whose multifaceted oeuvre—sculpture, ceramics, painting, drawing, collage, video, and fabric—can feel a bit all-over-the-place. But, continues Ruby, “this scattered routine belongs within a coherent strategy.” Ruby’s way with color plays a part in that coherence, as does a penetrating sense of anxiety, and anti-authoritarian comment. In the exhibition title, the word ACTS is short for “Absolute Contempt for Total Serenity,” which tells you something. —E.C.
