Dealer's Choice

Brendan Coyle and Kasper Hilton-Hille in Dealer’s Choice.

41 Earlham St, London WC2H 9LX, United Kingdom

It’s Sunday night and Stephen’s weekly poker game is about to begin. The usual crew trickles into the basement of his struggling London restaurant. Only this time, a stranger joins and the game takes a wild turn. Matthew Dunset directs this production of Patrick Marber’s Dealer’s Choice, which won Best West End Play at the 1995 Writer’s Guild of Great Britain Awards. Alfie Allen, Hammed Animashaun, Theo Barklem-Briggs, and others perform on a rotating set that shifts the focus from one player to the next. “What draws us in is the tangle of conflicting hopes and thwarted ambitions,” writes the Times critic Clive Davis. “It may be a reasonably short play, but by the end the players have passed through a dark night of the soul.” —Jeanne Malle
