Statement Pieces: Contemporary Fashion Design and the Gibbes Collection

Molly Goddard, Green Tulle Dress with Embroidered Flowers, Autumn–Winter 2017.

Art Charleston, the city’s premier annual arts festival, begins a little early this year, with its centerpiece show unveiled at the Gibbes Museum of Art. Maximalist fashion pieces from major designers and ateliers are displayed alongside symbiotic fine art spanning from the 1770s to the 21st century. For instance, a 2008 Alexander McQueen velvet coat and tulle gown combo is exhibited with an 1804 Gilbert Stuart portrait of Charleston-born General John R. Fenwick, highlighting the military inspiration behind McQueen’s look. A 2011 gold Gucci mini dress is accompanied by a 1770 Benjamin West portrait of a Charleston planter and aristocrat also adorned in warm gold tones. In this exhibition the city’s history meets inspired ensembles. —Lucy Horowitz
