In the 1930s and 40s, the photographer George Hurrell was living in Hollywood, working hard as M.G.M.’s in-house portrait artist. It was a great job. Every time the studio announced a new picture, Hurrell would produce head-shots of the leads. These striking black-and-white photographs were then circulated for marketing purposes, running in newspapers and magazines across the globe. Though Hurrell didn’t know it, his shots of M.G.M.’s pantheon—Joan Crawford! Greta Garbo! Clark Gable!—would define the era’s heady glamour. This exhibition features his best work. —Elena Clavarino
