Stanley Whitney started pursuing abstraction in the 1970s, but he only developed his unique compositions—loosely painted color grids—in the 1990s, when he moved to Rome. Into these rectilinear worlds of bright boxes, the artist works outside influences such as jazz, historic buildings, and traditional American quilts. Taking the spotlight in this exhibition is his latest painting, Dear Paris, inspired by Whitney’s stay in the French capital. Looking at the painting—gray and blue squares surrounded by unmistakably vibrant reds and greens—you may begin thinking of a stroll along the Seine. —Elena Clavarino
