Most Goya fans love the 1797 painting The Duchess of Alba. The unimpressed royal highness stands haughtily amid the highlands, dressed in an extravagant black-lace frock with golden sleeves and a vermillion sash. Her feet are impossibly tiny. Usually, the masterpiece hangs in a quiet corner of the Hispanic Museum & Library, alongside works by El Greco and Velazquez. For this exhibition, the museum’s best holdings from 16th-century Spain have traveled from 155th and Broadway to the Royal Academy in London. —Elena Clavarino
