Sophie Calle: Because

In the early 1980s, the French artist Sophie Calle found a stranger’s address book, which she returned … after photocopying its contents. She contacted each person in the book, interviewed them about its owner, and formed a portrait of him. The project, called “The Address Book,” was controversial, and it exposed Calle to liability. But exposure forms the artistic core of her work. In 2009, Calle exposed herself yet again by asking 107 women—artists, musicians, and scientists (plus one parrot)—to interpret a break-up email she had received. In “Because,” Calle’s artistic renderings of these interpretations are each revealed with the lift of a velvet curtain. And each curtain is embroidered with a message relevant to the art it conceals. —C.J.F.
