The end of organized slavery—the holding of human beings as personal property—brought segregation, then integration (which was undermined by systemic racism). Even now, the inequality in our societies takes an unacceptable toll. The first comprehensive exhibition to examine the Dutch role in the slave trade, specifically during the colonial period of the 17th to 19th centuries, uses objects, paintings, and narrative to tell this story. The show originated at the Rijksmuseum and now transfers to the United Nations Headquarters, in New York City. —Elena Clavarino
